Beck’s cuts shrink to less than 1 percent

At Beck’s with the managers, we refer to a “15-minute coffee break” to take the time to review the shift analysis dashboard from the prior day. The manager can quickly review stats on number of refunds, no sale, void transactions, etc. The obvious issues will stick out and easily match video to individual transactions for further review. This is a time saver and game changer!”

Background

Beck Oil Company, now named Beck’s, operates 21 convenience stores and has been led on the technology side for nearly 20 years by Director of IT Dino Gualandri. In an industry where shrink often sits between 1.6 and 3 percent, Beck’s has driven its shrink down to less than 1 percent. The difference was not more cameras or more reports. It was the ability to cut through all the data and video to find the moments that actually needed actioning really quickly, and then being able to resolve it faster, in the moment.

Overwhelmed with data, short on time

Convenience retail generates enormous amounts of data every day. Transactions, refunds, voids, drawer opens, inventory counts, surveillance footage. The information exists. The problem is navigating it.

Before Solink, the managers at Beck’s had access to video and reports, but extracting meaningful insight required manual effort. Reviewing suspicious activity meant scrubbing through footage, cross-referencing timestamps, and often calling IT for help.

“When they had to search through video footage, they would say ‘come here and do it for me.’ So guess what? Hours of my time would be gone.”

The same friction showed up in shift reviews. Managers were expected to review refunds, no sales, and voids daily. In reality, the process was so manual that it often did not happen.

“They didn’t even do shift analysis because it was so hard. It would take many days and they would have to slot out dedicated time to do it.”

This is the trap many operators fall into. They collect data but lack the time and tools to identify which events deserve attention. As stores scale, manual oversight becomes impossible.

Shrink at Beck’s had already been reduced quite low, below common industry averages. But Dino has a mission to push avoidable losses down even further, as low as possible. Solink allowed the Beck’s team to drive shrink down even further through shift analysis reports that identified where loss lives and enabled managers to act quickly on resolving it.

From watching everything to reviewing what matters

Beck’s standardized on Solink and layered AI onto its existing camera infrastructure. There was no rip-and-replace. Instead, the company replaced manual searching across their legacy cameras with intelligent filtering fueled by Solink AI.

“You can use your existing cameras. That was a significant savings! This is real, you need to take that first pilot and get going.”

The breakthrough came with automated shift analysis. Rather than combing through every transaction, managers now begin each morning with a focused review of exceptions tied directly to video.

“At Beck’s with the managers, we refer to a “15-minute coffee break” to take the time to review the shift analysis dashboard from the prior day. The manager can quickly review stats on number of refunds, no sale, void transactions, etc. The obvious issues will stick out and easily match video to individual transactions for further review. This is a time saver and game changer!”

Solink AI acts as a first layer of review, narrowing thousands of transactions down to the handful worth human attention. Beck’s is employing Solink AI to help managers catch specific types of activities within their stores, including:

  • Refund spikes → Identifies abnormal refund patterns by cashier or shift before they turn into habitual loss
  • Excessive voids and no-sales → Flags potential sweethearting or register manipulation tied directly to video
  • Unusual cash drawer activity → Highlights repeated drawer opens without transactions
  • Out-of-stock detection in coolers → Identifies missed revenue opportunities before lost sales compound
  • Hazard detection → Surfaces spills or unsafe conditions in real time to reduce liability exposure
  • Dwell time in high-shrink zones → Detects individuals lingering in aisles beyond normal shopping behavior

In one recurring liquor theft case, the team simply highlighted the problem zone and pulled every relevant clip instantly.

“Within seconds, I can instantly get any clip. Then, we can identify what’s going on and call the authorities.”

Shrink below industry norms

Managers no longer spend hours hunting through footage. They spend minutes reviewing prioritized events that directly impact shrink, safety, and store performance.

The impact was measurable. Shrink dropped in half to below 1 percent, dramatically below typical retail benchmarks.

“We already had a pie in the sky score, but Solink helped us go even lower by half.”

The measurable shrink reduction made the ROI easy to justify.

Beck’s rolled Solink out across all 21 stores in months rather than the year originally anticipated, largely because the team was able to leverage existing cameras instead of replacing hardware. Managers adopted it quickly, training took roughly 30 minutes, and daily usage became routine.

“After we rolled out Solink, I asked the team if I could take this tool away. And the unanimous answer was no. Even from the more skeptical ones that are more resistant to change.”

Focus beats volume when mitigating shrink

Beck’s did not cut shrink by adding more oversight. They cut shrink by focusing attention on the few events that actually matter. By filtering thousands of daily transactions into a short list of high-risk exceptions, managers can act quickly instead of getting lost in data. At less than 1 percent shrink, Beck’s has proven that disciplined review driven by AI video intelligence can push performance well beyond industry norms.
